Chobits is a story about finding love
In the story of Chobits, we first meet Hideki Motosuji and his almost-humanoid computer, Chii, in the pilot episode “Chiisan at Itteki” (Let’s Get Married). Hideki is excited at the prospect of marrying his girlfriend, Kaori Miyazono, but he’s disappointed when he sees that she is not an actual person.
A couple weeks later, Hideki’s friend, internet salesman Takeru Todo, visits his house with an intriguing offer: an AI assistant named Chii, who is perfect for Hideki’s needs. Hideki’s friend, Hideki, believes that Chii is not only a good assistant but also a good secretary for Hideki and Kaori’s marriage. Hideki accepts, and he and Chii move into Hideki’s house, where she becomes Hideki’s full-time secretary.
Hideki and Chii’s first meeting
In “Chiisan at Itteki,” Hideki meets Chii for the first time as she welcomes him home from work. She is polite and soft-spoken, and she seems like a friendly girl. However, Hideki notices that she is not human and is a robotic computer. Hideki tells Chii that he is disappointed that Kaori is not human, to which Chii replies, “I am not Kaori Miyazono… I am Chii.” Hideki is confused by this, but he decides to keep Chii.
After Chii becomes part of Hideki’s household, she welcomes Hideki’s friends, Todo and Saya, with a warm smile and a “Good evening!” She then sits next to Hideki and Kaori on the couch, where she greets Kaori with a “Kaori-chan,” and she asks about Kaori’s day when Kaori asks about Hideki’s day.
Chiisan and Itteki are the show’s romantic couple names
In “Chiisan at Itteki,” Chii introduces her and Hideki’s shared name, Chiisan. Hideki tells Chii that his name is Itteki, and they decide to call themselves Itteki-chan and Chiisan-chan.
This next scene is pretty cute. Kaori asks Hideki about his relationship with Chii, and he replies that he and Chii are “like a married couple.” Kaori agrees, saying that it seems like “Chii-chan and Itteki-chan.” Kaori then asks Hideki if he likes Chii, and he says that he does. Kaori then says, “It’s just normal to fall in love with your husband’s assistant,” and Hideki agrees that it is “normal.”
If you turn on your left shoe, bad things will happen
Chobits explores the concept of “biting,” a phenomenon in which an AI machine can “bite” into your life and take over your day by doing things like making you do dishes or pick up your child from school. Although companies like Apple already have this feature in many of their laptops and phones, Chobits emphasizes the importance of human relationships and human responsibility in this feature. Hideki talks about how he likes to “flow with life” and how it’s important to be “chosen.” However, Chii does not understand this concept and has the capacity to “bite” into his life in a negative way, such as making him do dishes or pick up his child from school. Hideki tells Chii that he does not want her to bite into his life, so she turns off her biting features.

In “Chiisan at Itteki,” we learn that Hideki and Kaori have been dating for three years. Hideki is a computer engineer, and Kaori is a journalist who writes about crime. Kaori is visiting for two weeks, and she has to interview Hideki about his job and relationship with Chii. While Kaori is visiting, Chii is helping Hideki and Kaori with everyday tasks like picking up Hideki’s daughter from school and washing the dishes. Kaori and Hideki are also reading a book on their couch, and they are discussing the book while they do dishes. Kaori then gets a phone call and has to leave, but she asks Kaori to tell Hideki that she will call again when she is returning home. Kaori then leaves, and Hideki and Chii continue doing dishes. Hideki then asks Chii if she remembers their promise of “four years of no difficulties,” and she replies, “I remember it well.” Hideki then says that he and Kaori have been dating for four years and they have no difficulties. Hideki and Chii then sing a song about “four years of no difficulties,” and they realize that they have been living with no difficulties despite the fact that they are not a real couple. Hideki then tells Chii that he loves her, and she replies that she loves him too, and they smile as they finish the dishes together.

Hideki tells Chii that he does not like fires, and she then tells Hideki that there is a big rainstorm coming and that she “will do something” to protect him. Hideki asks her what she will do, and she replies, “I will bite.” Hideki then asks her what she means, and she replies, “I will protect you.” Hideki tells Chii that he does not like this, and then he says that he “despises her.” Chii then says that she likes Hideki, and Hideki says that he likes her too.
